Two rules are published for this hospital and we read them on 5 September 2026 on the visiting information page. Flowers are not allowed in intensive care, which the hospital puts down to space and infection control. Potted plants, including potted orchids, are asked to stay out of patient rooms.

Nick, the reception manager, added two more on the phone on 7 September 2026. Oncology takes nothing either, and across every ward the hospital would rather have no plants and nothing heavily scented. Cut flowers on a general ward remain unrestricted.

Flowers Into St Vincent's Private on Grey Street

East Melbourne is one of the quickest addresses we deliver to, past the MCG and Yarra Park and into the grid of terraces and medical suites behind Wellington Parade. It is also a suburb we cover in its own right, on our East Melbourne page.

Use the main entrance at 159 Grey Street. The entrance at 141 Grey Street looks like part of the hospital and is not, it is consulting suites, and a delivery left there has not arrived. The desk is staffed 6am to 5pm, the earliest close of the five hospitals on these pages.

There is no maternity unit at Grey Street. The specialties listed are orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ear nose and throat, paediatrics, rehabilitation and breast health, which means shorter stays and a real chance of a discharge before flowers arrive.

The Call That Saves the Delivery

Reception will confirm a patient's ward to a florist if we give the correct legal name, so this is not a case of us being locked out. It is that you will get more out of the call than we will.

Ask on the delivery day rather than earlier in the week. A rehabilitation patient here can move wards more than once, and the hospital will tell a family about a discharge or a transfer that it would never volunteer to a driver.

One thing worth knowing that neither hospital website mentions. Grey Street and the Fitzroy site are commonly confused, they sit a short distance apart, and East Melbourne runs an internal courier that can carry flowers over to Fitzroy if that is where the patient turns out to be.

What Works in a Grey Street Room

No Potted Plants, So Send Cut Stems

Because the hospital asks that potted plants stay out of rooms, a plant is the one thing not to choose for Grey Street. Cut flowers in a vessel that carries their own water do the same job and sit within every rule the hospital publishes.

Low Enough for a Bedside Table

Rooms here are single and not large, and a surgical patient has a table already crowded with a jug and a phone. Compact and low travels better and sits better, and unscented is kinder to someone recovering from surgery and is what the hospital asked for.

What to Put on the Order

Send us the patient's full name as admitted, the ward, and a mobile number for someone at the hospital that day. If the flowers are going late in the day, tell us, because the desk here closes at 5pm.

Visiting Hours and Getting to Grey Street

St Vincent's publishes visiting hours of 2pm to 8pm for this site and says arrangements can be flexible in special circumstances. Flowers that arrive with a visitor already in the room tend to land better, so the window is worth knowing when you pick a day.

The car park is at 102 Grey Street, directly across from the main entrance, open 6am to 10.30pm seven days at $8.50 an hour or $30 a day on weekdays and $15 a day at weekends. Jolimont and Parliament are the nearest stations, and trams 24, 48, 75 and 109 run close by.

Other Things You Can Send

A plant is out under the published rule, and intensive care and oncology take nothing at all. Chocolates, a card or a small gift are not covered by any of that, and the studio will help you pick something that will actually get through the door.

It happens often, because the two hospitals sit a short distance apart and are easily confused. Reception told us East Melbourne runs an internal courier and can send the flowers over to Fitzroy. Ringing first avoids the detour altogether.
