Stephen and Lea were married on a perfect summer day, with both the ceremony and reception held at Luminare in South Melbourne.
From the outset, this was a wedding with a clear visual direction. Lea wanted rich colour, strong floral presence and a setting that reflected both the couple’s style and their English and Asian backgrounds. One of the things I have always liked about Luminare is its clarity. The rooftop setting, city outlook and modern interior give you a strong architectural base, which means the flowers need to be intentional. For Stephen and Lea, that made it exactly the right venue for a celebration that felt polished, dramatic and visually assured. There was no need to overcomplicate the setting. It simply needed flowers with enough presence to hold the room.

The ceremony took place on the rooftop and was styled with a white canopy, Philippe Starck ghost chairs and blue hydrangea spheres set in tall clear cylinder vases. A rich red carpet ran through the aisle, which gave the ceremony a strong sense of occasion and exactly the right amount of drama. I liked the contrast in this part of the day. The reception is where the floral brief really came to life. Guests moved from the ceremony into a room filled with dense floral groupings and bold, saturated colour. Rather than rely on one repeated arrangement throughout, I worked with slightly different combinations of vessels and flower placements across the tables, which helped the room feel layered and generous. Because so much of the visual story sat in the tablescapes, it was important that each arrangement had enough weight and character to contribute to the overall atmosphere.

Lea’s brief was simply ‘rich colour’, and that gave us a very clear starting point. I used burgundy dahlias, fuchsia phalaenopsis orchids, purple and hot pink Vanda orchids, blue and purple hydrangeas, and scented garden roses to build a palette that felt full, confident and expressive. The couple had also brought in beautiful oriental props, and the flowers worked alongside them naturally. That balance mattered. The aim was not just to create impact, but to make sure the room felt cohesive and true to the couple.
