Lesley and Michael’s wedding was a beautifully classic Melbourne celebration, beginning with a ceremony at St Peter’s Church in Toorak and continuing with a black tie reception in The Hotel Windsor Ballroom.
I first met Lesley and Michael in 2011, and from the beginning they had a very clear sense of how they wanted their day to feel. Elegant, formal, romantic and filled with flowers. Their brief was a grand black tie wedding with abundant white florals, designed to feel timeless within two of Melbourne’s most beautiful wedding settings.
For this celebration, we sourced more than 300 bunches of premium white hydrangeas from Sydney and over 400 bunches of locally grown peony roses from Romsey. I still remember the studio feeling completely full of white flowers. It was one of those weddings where the scale of the floral work created its own atmosphere before we had even arrived on site.
A classic Melbourne wedding at St Peter’s Church and The Hotel Windsor
The ceremony was held at St Peter’s Church in Toorak, a setting that naturally suited the couple’s classic floral direction. For a church ceremony, flowers need to feel generous enough to honour the architecture without overwhelming the meaning of the moment.
We designed large focal floral arrangements for the ceremony and dressed the aisle with dense flower pew domes. The effect was soft, formal and beautifully romantic, creating a floral pathway for Lesley’s entrance while keeping the overall feeling elegant and restrained.
Lesley’s bridal bouquet
Lesley’s bridal bouquet was created with some of her favourite flowers, including peony roses, hydrangeas, freesias and lisianthus. The palette was entirely white, with layers of softness, fragrance and texture bringing depth to the design.
One of the most meaningful details was the ring that belonged to Lesley’s grandmother, which we carefully styled into her bouquet. These are the details we always remember. They bring a deeply personal layer to the flowers and make the bouquet feel connected not only to the wedding day, but to family, memory and love.
White ballroom wedding flowers at The Hotel Windsor
Following the ceremony, guests moved to The Hotel Windsor Ballroom for the reception. The room called for floral styling with presence, so we created tall arrangements using old world silver candelabras, dressed generously with white hydrangeas and white peony roses.
The combination of white flowers, candlelight and silver detailing felt beautifully suited to the ballroom. It gave the reception a sense of grandeur while still feeling soft and romantic. For a black tie wedding, this balance matters. The flowers should elevate the room without making it feel heavy.
A timeless white wedding flower palette
White wedding flowers will always have a place in classic Melbourne weddings, particularly when the setting has this level of history and formality. Hydrangeas brought fullness and softness, while peony roses added romance, movement and a sense of seasonal luxury.
